This class is collaboratively designed, based upon each student's individual skill level and interest, with a focus on classical watercolor fundamentals.
Supply List
-
Watercolor Paper - please get 140 lbs acid free paper that is at least 8" x 10" or larger!
Stationary Plus in St. Stephen carries a pad of 140 lbs watercolor paper, and the Walmart in Calais carries another similar brand-both are excellent choices!
If you prefer to work in a sketchbook, I recommend the Strathmore series 400 hardcover watercolor sketchbook (available at Michael's in Saint John or online at Jackson's or Blick) or the Etchr Watercolor sketchbook (100% cotton paper available online). There may be a wirebound option at Walmart, too.
-
Watercolor Brush - If you only get one, make it a size 6! My favourite brands are: Raphael 8408 or Windsor Newton Series 7 for kolinsky brushes, and Princeton 4850 or 4050 for synthetics.
-
Mixing Tray - Affordable, plastic round-welled mixing trays are available at Stationary Plus.
-
Professional Grade Watercolor Paints - in either tube or pan, to mix the primary colours (professional watercolor brands include: Windsor & Newton, M. Graham & Co, Daniel Smith, St. Petersburg, among others).
-
Yellow in either of the following pigments:
- Hansa Yellow (PY97)
- Nickel Azomethine Yellow (PY150) -
We will mix our cyan from either:
- Phthalo Turquoise (PB16)
- Phththalo Blue (PB15:3)
And from:
- Phthalo Green (PG7)
(If you are able to get a pre-mixed cyan from St. Petersburg "White Nights" line of paints, that would be simpler! The color you want to look for is called "Azure Blue 519" available here: https://stpetersburgwatercolours.com/whole-pans). -
Magenta as:
- Quinacridone Magenta (PR122) -
Ivory Black (PBk9)

Frequently Asked Questions
May beginners join this program?
Yes! My classes cover art fundamentals, which means they are an excellent foundation for the artist who is just learning to draw and paint. The assignments will challenge more experienced artists, as well.
And class size is limited to ensure every student will receive individual feedback and instruction.
What will I learn?
You will be inspired by master painters and illustrators of the past, and given practical assignments to empower you to put into practice what you are learning by drawing from reference, life, and imagination!
Where is the class located?
In my home studio, located at 75 Union Street, in the heart of St. Stephen, New Brunswick.
To get to my studio, enter the leftmost door in the garage (the human-sized door with the sign on it telling you you're in the right place), and head up the stairs!
When is it and how long are the classes? May I attend either time slot?
Yes, you may attend either the morning session at 9:30 am, or the evening session starting at 6:30 pm. Both sessions are 2.5 hours in length.
Will there be homework?
Yes, but it is up to you if you complete it!
What age category are your classes designed for?
My classes are for adults, though teens 13 years old and up are welcome to attend.
